Otolith adaptive responses to altered gravity

چکیده

The force of gravity has remained constantly present over the course animal evolution and forms our frame reference with environment, including spatial orientation, navigation, gaze postural stability. Inertial head accelerations occur within this naturally during voluntary movements perturbations. Execution aquatic, terrestrial flight species widely differ, but sensory systems detecting acceleration forces, gravity, have remarkably conserved among vertebrates. utricular organ senses sum inertial due to translation tilt relative gravitational vertical. A sudden or persistent change in would be expected profound global effects on an organism. Physiological data collected immediately after orbital missions, short extended increases load via centrifugation, readaptation normal exist toadfish model. This review focuses otolith adaptive responses changes a number model organisms their potential impact human space travel.

The vestibular system and cardiovascular responses to altered gravity.

CONSIDERABLE EVIDENCE from experiments conducted on animals (e.g., Refs. 1, 5, 6, 10) and human subjects (e.g., Refs. 4, 7–9, 11) demonstrates that inputs from otolith receptors in the inner ear participate in regulating blood pressure during movement and changes in posture. Otolith receptors detect linear acceleration of the head, including variations in head position with respect to gravity. ...

Adaptive responses of fish membranes to altered environmental temperature.

transport via the ASC system is important to cell function in terms of supplying precursors for intracellular glutathione biosynthesis. These observations of the temperature-sensitivity of the Na+-pump, mediated passive K+ transport and amino acid transport systems confirm the heterogeneity of behaviour of different membrane transport systems in both hibernator and non-hibernatbr membranes (Ell...

Canal and otolith contributions to compensatory tilt responses in pigeons.

Gaze-stabilizing eye and head responses compensate more effectively for low-frequency rotational motion when such motion stimulates the otolith organs, as during earth-horizontal axis rotations. However, the nature of the otolith signal responsible for this improvement in performance has not been previously determined. In this study, we used combinations of earth-horizontal axis rotational and ...

A model that relates canal-ocular to otolith-ocular responses.

Rotation about the vertical stimulates primarily the horizontal semicircular canals and produces compensatory horizontal nystagmus whose slow component velocity response during constant velocity can be approximated as having a simple exponential decay time constant, Tvor. Constant velocity yaw rotation about a horizontal axis stimulates both the horizontal canals and the otolith organs, produci...

Inactivation of semicircular canals causes adaptive increases in otolith-driven tilt responses.

Growing experimental and theoretical evidence suggests a functional synergy in the processing of otolith and semicircular canal signals for the generation of the vestibulo-ocular reflexes (VORs). In this study we have further tested this functional interaction by quantifying the adaptive changes in the otolith-ocular system during both rotational and translational movements after surgical inact...
